The Adidas Superstar basketball sneaker was released in 1969 as the first low top to enter the game of basketball. This sneaker became known from obviously the game of basketball but also from a famous rap group called Run-DMC. Many people on the streets started to wear these basketball sneakers for style not just performance. This is one of the shoes that made it "cool" to where basketball sneakers outside of the game. The shoe was initially marketed to basketball players and it quickly attracted the attention of some of the top NBA and college players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. However by the late 70's over 75% of NBA players played in a pair of Adidas superstars. In 1986 Run-DMC made a song called "My Adidas" and the shoe was seen everywhere on the streets. Adidas ended up signing $1 million with Run-DMC to continue promoting the shoes. Today this shoe is no longer used in basketball but is still an active sneaker in the hip-hop culture.
