The "Converse Rubber Shoe Company was created by Marquis Mills in 1908 in Massachusetts. In 1917 the company designed a shoe called the All Star. This shoe was composed of a rubber sole and a canvas upper that was designed to be an elite shoe for basketball players. In 1921 Chuck Taylor joined a basketball team that was sponsored by Converse Company called "The Converse All Stars. Chuck did basketball clinics in high schools all over the world and at the same time sold the shoes to players at his clinic. Taylor made improvements to the shoe shortly after they were released. Some of the improvements were adding more ankle support, increasing the flexibility, and adding and ankle patch. These shoes became very popular in the 1960's, 90% of professional basketball players wore converse shoes and nearly every young basketball player had a pair. The shoe ruled for more than 40 years and have been the best selling shoe in the country with over 600 million pairs sold.
